Installing & Validating the MID Server

Installing and validating the MID Servers is an important process, helping admins locate the right MID Server download page and select the right one for a Windows 64-bit host. Also, this topic acts as the MID Server installation guide ServiceNow.
Download MID Server Windows 64 bit.
To get a MID Server download link, you just have to download it from the ServiceNow instance, not from the publicly available ServiceNow website. This way, you can be sure that the MID Server matches the instance’s release version.
The steps to download the MID Server are:
- In MID Server → click Download MID Server.
- A separate section for Windows downloads will open.
- Click Windows (MSI) – 64 bit Installer package or download the ZIP archive for Windows.
Both MSI and ZIP are two different methods to install. MSI installer is a guided wizard that is best for a first-time Windows install. With the ZIP archive, you have to extract and configure files manually.

How to install MID Server?
Once you have downloaded the MID Server, you also have to install the MID Server in a ServiceNow Instance. The manual installation process for Windows is:
- Extract the ZIP file to a stable location. The extracted folder is usually named “Agent” and contains multiple subfolders, top-level files, an XML configuration file and batch files.
- Find and open the configuration file in the agent folder, and locate “config.xml”. Open the XML file with a text editor and fill in the URL, username, and password.
- Save and close the file, and start the MID Server.
- In the same folder, start the batch file and choose Run as administrator. It will install and start the MID Server as a Windows service.
Finally, validate and verify registration on the ServiceNow instance. With MID Servers, you don’t have to create a record manually, as ServiceNow automatically creates a matching MID Server record. A dedicated user account with mid_server role is required to authenticate.
Validating MID Server
Validating the MID Server is a very important step as it allows ServiceNow to handle automation credentials and execution of outbound ECC probes. The MID Server validation steps are:
- Go to MID Server → Servers and open the record you installed.
- In the related links section, select Validate.
- You will be asked to confirm the scope and add access to the MID Server for :
- IP ranges
- Capabilities
- Applications
- Finally, save and confirm the validation.
- Validation may take time to complete, so once it is successful, the MID Server record shows a green validated indicator.
