Understanding the MID Server & Prerequisites
Imagine your office with hundreds of IT assets spread across teams, but an administrator can not track it all manually. To make this process easier and faster, MID Servers have to be installed. It helps admins see every device on the network and report details about them to ServiceNow, automatically populating the CMDB with the right CIs.
In this chapter, we will cover what a MID Server is and how you can create a user record.
What is MID Server in ServiceNow?
MID Server (Management, Instrumentation, and Discovery) is a small, simple Java application installed on a system in your organization’s network. The server can be Windows, Linux, or even a simple workstation.
MID Server in ServiceNow acts as a secure bridge between the ServiceNow instance and the internal network, such as servers, laptops, routers, databases, and other applications. The servers sit behind the corporate firewall and are not directly reachable from the internet.
What is the server used for?
MID servers in ServiceNow are used in several major use cases, including:

Create MID Server User Record
Creating a dedicated user account is important, as the ServiceNow instance needs a way to confirm the MID Server connectivity. The instance URL is not a secret, but anyone can see that, so the MID Server prerequisites/ credentials are required to be authenticated.
For a MID Server user account setup, the steps include:
Step 1: In IT Operations Management, navigate to Guided Setup → MID Server.
Step 2: Choose Create MID user task or create a new user record, and fill in the user ID/username and password.
Step 3: Save and submit the user record.
Step 4: Finally, open the user record and add roles from the roles related list.
